EXCLUSIVE: A recap of Bobi Wine interview with BBS
The President of Uganda H.E Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert held an exclusive interview on Buganda Kingdom owned BBS Terefayina where he highlighted his real life story on #BBSMubuwuufu program. The president held an interesting lively chat with Stellah Nandawula at his prestigious family home in Magere, Kyadondo East, in Wakiso District.
In the interview, Bobi Wine talks about his political journey; an appeal that stemmed from a ‘leadership vacuum’ in #Uganda. Many young people wanted change and the political pressure group called the “People Power Movement” was formed.
When the government blocked its registration as a formal political party, Bobi Wine and his leadership team outmanoeuvred the Electoral Commission by aligning themselves with a smaller, pre-existing one dubbed NURP [the National Unity, Reconciliation and Development Party then led by Moses Nkonge Kibalama] which was acquired and renamed the “National Unity Platform” . Several existing Members of Parliament in the preceding tenth House signed up to join the new party.
Bobi Wine has been arrested many times, often on dubious charges, beaten and tortured as witnessed in Arua in 2018 where his driver was gruesomely murdered by the SFC. The nature of his experience and the severity of his treatment has transformed him and changed Uganda’s political trajectory forever.
The Bobi Wine before stepping into the political arena is not similar to the one who has experienced arrests, assaults, and detentions. In the course of the struggle, several of Bobi’s friends and supporters have been murdered and some continued to be abducted in state sanctioned disapperances.
When Bobi Wine announced his campaign for president in 2020, Uganda’s youth were ecstatic, filling parks and streets for his every speech, and singing the anthems of peace and freedom such as “Tuliyambala Engule”. Then the crackdown commenced, with him, his campaign team, and supporters being arrested, beaten, kidnapped, or tortured.
The arrests continued unabated throughout the election campaigns, the campaign rallies were restricted and opposition supporters were met with deadly force on multiple occasions. Most tragically, following Bobi Wine’s arrest in mid-November, nationwide #FreeBobiWine protests erupted during which state security forces killed at least 54 people (their officially declared number).
On polling day, 14 January 2021, Bobi Wine, his wife Barbie Itungo were placed under de facto house arrest by security forces. Following the polls, soldiers and police surrounded their home, and hindered members of his household including his wife from leaving or even getting food from their garden. A court ordered his release after 11 days in illegal house detention.
In the interview, Bobi Wine talks about how some of his supporters and members of the political party, NUP, have been compromised due to one reason or another, but says this was anticipated along the way and it hasn’t deterred him and others from continuing to pursue their mission.
He briefly talks about the terms of office outlined in the NUP Constitution, his relationship with other political leaders and also about his relationship with the Buganda Kingdom.
