A total of 153 supporters from different political parties have defected to the Opposition National Unity Platform NUP.

The new supporters from other political parties including NRM were received by a group of NUP top leaders headed by their Principal Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu at their party headquarters in Kamwokya on Tuesday.

In his welcoming address, Kyagulanyi has condemned the persistent abductions that are witnessed every the other day in the country with the latest being of one Haruna Lukyamuzi, a NUP foot soldier who revealed to the gathering a touching story how he was treated while in the hands of his abductors for two months over allegations of planning to burn a police post.

He reminded Ugandans that nobody is safe in the country not even be protected by the law citing the Kampala based businessman Hamis Kiggundu aka Ham who once glorified those in government but claims they are mooting for his downfall if not his life.

He challenged the security personnel to do their roles responsibly but also challenged the government to improve on their remuneration to avoid acts against the citizens and their masters.

NUP statement;

Earlier today (Tuesday) at our headquarters, we were delighted to welcome new members into the Party. These individuals have decided to unite with us, coming from various political formations in Uganda, with a significant number transitioning from the National Resistance Movement (NRM).

We are built on the fundamental principle of inclusivity and the belief that a united front can bring about positive change for our nation. We are thrilled to see individuals from diverse backgrounds, experiences, and political affiliations recognize the importance of this shared vision.

The decision of our new members to join us signifies a growing desire for a fresh approach to governance, one that prioritizes the needs and aspirations of the Ugandan people. It reflects their belief in the core values we uphold, such as social justice, equality, and the pursuit of a prosperous future for all citizens.

President Bobi Wine also used the occasion to address the country on a number of key issues that are collectively affecting the country, ranging from the continued abductions of our supporters to the current state of insecurity, among others.
