Activists who protested Karamoja iron sheets theft remanded

Buganda Road Court yesterday remanded the 8 activists from the Torture Survivors Movement to Luzira prison following their Tuesday arrest in downtown Kampala.

The eight suspects were slapped with two counts of unlawful assembly contrary to the Public Order Management Act 2013, and assault of a police officer on duty, a one ASP Flavia Musimenta.

The eight include Kawooya Sharif, Ssegawa Shafik, Bukenya Moses, Matanda Agustine, Nayebare Gilbert, Najjuma Sanyu, Ndyasiima Nelson and Ssemakula Teddy. They have been remanded to Prison until April 12.

Today, eight comrades who recently staged a peaceful protest calling for the prosecution of the Speaker of Parliament, MPs, regime Ministers and other individuals who stole ironsheets meant for the poor people of Karamoja have instead been charged with “assaulting” a police officer. The eight — Kawooya Sharif, Ssegawa Shafik, Bukenya Moses, Matanda Agustine, Nayebare Gilbert, Najjuma Sanyu, Ndyasiima Nelson and Ssemakula Teddy — have now been remanded to Luzira Prison until April 12.

Certainly, this trial is intended to shift attention away from the iron sheet thieves, who should have been booked places in police cells as soon as the scandal unravelled.
