Among, Basalirwa to return 7 year term proposal for MPs
The speaker of Parliament Anita Among will through her favorite MP Asuman Basalirwa return the proposal to extend the tenure of elected lawmakers from the current 5 years to 7 years.
According to trusted sources inside parliament, plans are being mooted by the speaker and the Bugiri Municipality MP Asuman Basalirwa to table a private member’s bill and be granted leave to make justifications for his proposal to prolong the term of office for MPs.
Basalirwa and Among argue that when an MP has just entered parliament, he or she spends the first years trying to recover from the political stress associated with campaigns.
They also stress that the government spends too much money on elections yet these expenses can be avoided by delaying the elections for at least 7 years.
We are informed that the House will be dissolved and sent to recess as the Speaker and Basalirwa reach out to other Members to seek their endorsement for the proposal.
When the amendment is passed and approved by the House, it will take effect from the 2026 tenure.
