Army chief Kulayigye claims NUP wanted to kill Mwesigwa

The spokesperson of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces Brig. Gen. Felix Kulayigye has explained the whereabouts of Mr. Eric Mwesigwa, moments after his sudden disappearance from the public limelight.

According to Kulayigye, intelligence had gathered credible reports indicating that ever since Mwesigwa blamed his torture on the opposition National Unity Platform party, threats to his life surged.

“We are keeping Mwesigwa in a very safe place where he is sound and healthy. NUP extremists wanted to hunt him down and afflict more pain on him,” Kulayigye said. “It was on his request that we offered to protect him. It is constitutional to accord state protection to any citizen in danger,” he guided.

Asked if Mwesigwa’s relatives know where exactly he is being held, Kulayigye said it is not anybody’s concern for now.

“What do you want to do? I told you we safely have him. He is in touch with his family,” Kulayigye angrily fumed at journalists who had asked. “Those NUP extremists are ashamed of what they did. Mwesigwa exposed them. That’s why they are after his life,” Kulayigye emphasized.

A relative to Mr. Mwesigwa says they last saw him on that fateful day of March 1 when he was at the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence-CMI headquarters in Mbuya.

“He did not return home on that day. He only called and told us he is safe. But we cannot guarantee since we’ve not seen him for days now,” said a relative.

NUP party spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi however laughed at all the prevailing UPDF antics and challenged Kulayigye to go and institute arrests on the individuals Mwesigwa disclosed in his testimony.

“If we operate drones like they are saying, let them come and make arrests. They have CCTV cameras, let them spot those so called NUP drones and impound them,” he dared.
