A statement from the Uganda Prisons Service spokesperson Frank Baine Mayanja indicates that the National Unity Platform party lawmakers Allan Ssewanyana and Muhammad Ssegirinya who were today granted a UGX 20m cash bail by Masaka have been discharged from Kigo.

Addressing the public on the matter as he appeared on the NBS Television exclusive interview this night, Baine said the MPs were released immediately when their bail terms were met.

“A court order and bank receipts were scanned and sent to the Officer in Charge of Kigo prison who then granted bail to the suspects,” said Baine. “The MPs asked for privacy and did not want to talk to media. We escorted them past the quarter guard check point and they proceeded to their destination,” he added.

However, the deployment outside Kigo prison has intensified as police and military monitor the swelling crowds of supporters and politicians who are outside the premises of the penitentiary to receive the newly released lawmakers.
