The long-awaited premiere of the documentary “Bobiwine the people’s president” is happening now at the Wallis Annenberg Center for Performing Arts in Beverly Hills. In attendance is H.E Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu, “First Lady” Barbie, “the first family”and Comrade Nubian Li.

The price of challenging Museveni is high. After nearly 40 years in power, Yoweri Museveni has no intention of handing over power to opposition leader Bobi Wine and his young followers, mobilising the police, army and press in a dirty battle for power. The directing duo Moses Bwayo and Christopher Sharp have followed Wine (whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi) and his wife Barbie over several years. The result is an epic and riveting drama about power, vanity and democracy in the vast African country that was once a pioneer of the continent – and may be again.

This gripping documentary charts the inspiring activism of Bobi Wine, the pop star-turned-politician seeking to end Uganda’s brutal dictatorship. Rising from the ghetto slums of Kampala to be one of the country’s most beloved superstars, Bobi begins to use his music to call out corruption, then becomes an Independent Member of Parliament to defend the rights of his people. The country’s institutions are controlled by President Museveni, an autocratic tyrant who has held power since 1986. Bobi and his wife Barbie choose to risk their careers, their family, and their lives to challenge him and bring democracy to their country. But the state is determined to silence not only them, but anyone who supports their cause. #Labisa #PeoplePowerOurPower #JBMuwonge
