Body of fallen NUP lawyer Wameli diverted to Mulago

As soon as the remains of fallen National Unity Platform party lawyer Anthony Wameli touched base on Ugandan soil, authorities in the cargo department at Entebbe International Airport were directed to surrender the remains to police pathologists.

Instructions were that the police was to take the body to Mulago national referral hospital for another postmortem examination in line with the recommendations of the National medical board.

A source who asked not to be revealed says a postmortem examination of remains flown into the country is mandatory.

NUP supporters who had convened at their party head offices in Makerere Kavule were told by the emcee who also doubles as the party Deputy Spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro that the body would not be brought for public view as earlier anticipated.

“The body of our comrade lawyer Anthony Wameli has been taken to Mulago hospital where a postmortem is being made,” Waiswa said. “We will not be able to have him here but the function will proceed,” he added.

NUP President Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert appeared at 19:00hrs and the ceremony kickstarted. NUP leaders in capacity of MPs and councillors were present.

The mood was entirely sombre as several attendants paid tribute to counsel Wameli.

Counsel Wameli died on February, 8, 2023 in Boston Massachusetts where he has been receiving colon cancer since 2021.

Born on August 29, 1978 in Namisindwa district, Wameli started his education at City Primary School im 1985 where he completed his Primary Leaving Examinations, and joined St. Peter’s College Tororo for his O level. He attended Bukedi College Kachonga for his A level and proceeded to Makerere University in 2000 where he obtained a Bachelors of law before joining the Law Development Centre. He is survived by wife Olive Wameli and three children Ebenezer, Benjamim and Zion. He has been a pastor at a local church in Kanyanya, Kampala district.
