FDC asks Govt to mediate Kenyan crisis
As the political turmoil in Kenya escalates with the Azimio coalition leader Raila Odinga determined to sustain his mass protests, the Ugandan opposition Forum for Democratic Change party has called on Kampala to intervene before the situation spills out of hand.
The FDC pronounced its stand on the Kenyan crisis via its Deputy Spokesperson John Kikonyogo who notes that 90% of Uganda’s imports come in via Mombasa port. The FDC say instability in Kenya will directly impact on Uganda.
The FDC say Kampala should lobby for audience with the East African parliament and diplomatic relations at a lower level to prevail over the situation before 2007 like violence replicates.
“We interest the government of Uganda to think about the situation in Kenya more seriously, they shouldn’t take it for granted because it has a lot of effect on our economy. If there is a way of working out a solution despite being a foreign country, I believe it is high time they came in with whatever they could do,” Kikonyogo said.
On the first day of the protests, security on the border point of Busia was heightened with movement of goods restrained as traders feared losing their stock to protesters. Odinga says the protests will continue every Monday.
Reports in Nairobi say the Azimio protests caused loss of Kshs 2b to the Kenyan government.
