Katikkiro Mayiga questions Validity of Luwum day as torture prevails
The Premiere of Buganda Kingdom Charles Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga has morning joined the opposition and human rights defenders in condemning the rampant cases of torture of Ugandans by suspected elements in government security forces.
As Uganda commemorates the Janani Luwum Day today, February 16th, Mayiga said the celebrations were being contradicted by the unending cases of torture of citizens.
“It’s a contradiction and shame that we commemorate the murder of Archbishop Janan Luwum by Idi Amin when state security operatives torture Ugandans in this manner, today,” Mayiga tweeted.
“Respect for human rights is the foundation for democracy and progress,” he emphasized.
On his post, the Katikkiro attached torture pictures of Mr. Eric Mwesigwa, a Boda Boda rider from Nansana who alleged torture by operatives from the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence-CMI who reportedly abducted him a fortnight ago.
The UPDF spokesperson Brig. Gen. Felix Kulayigye was quick to disregard the claims that the army was responsible for the torture of Mr. Mwesigwa.
“Having done a thorough check on all security agencies, it has been established that a one Mwesigwa Eric was not in the hands of any security agency. We advise him to go to the UHRC and report or the police so that we can commence intensive investigation,” Kulayigye tweeted. Muntu however questioned the weight of this statement that seemingly insinuated the existence of a parallel force meting terror on Ugandans.
“The thought of there being an armed group conducting rogue ops without the awareness of any of the security services is even more frightening. (Is that what you intended to communicate?). If true all services would need to work 24/7 to terminate such a force,” Muntu opined in a tweet responding to Kulayigye’s denial.
