The Makerere University students’ Electoral Commission (EC) has disqualified National Unity Platform (NUP) flag bearer Nattabi Margaret from the 89th guild race after reportedly getting instructions from the Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe.

The EC claims that Margaret Nattabi together with another aspirant Namwoza Sulaiman participated in a ‘Kimenza’ at Mitchell Hall on April 5th thus contravening the law guiding the election process.

According to EC, the participation of the duo in the ‘Kimenza’ is contrary to the Makerere University students guild statute 2022 which stipulates that elections shall be virtual.

On April 5th, the duo attended a Kimenza in which NUP candidate Margaret Nattabi was endorsed as the hall’s flag bearer. A scuffle is said to have come up, injuring a Sserujjonji Robert who is also a student.

In the same development, management has suspended a one Byaruhanga Isaac, a medical student for involving himself in the Kimenza.
EC has also passed a warning to all aspirants affiliated to political parties and gave them upto April 6th to come out and publicly distance themselves from them in a recorded video.

Makerere University banned partisan politics last year following an election scuffle between NUP and FDC supporters. The scuffle left one student (Bewatte Betungura) dead.

This rather regrettable incident prompted Makerere University Council to amend the guild constitution and election guidelines. In the new guidelines, Makerere University students were banned from campaigning physically
