NUP councillors defy Kamwokya, to meet Museveni today

A section of opposition National Unity Platform party councillors from Mukono and Wakiso districts have defied the party position and attended the ongoing training at Kyankwanzi Leadership Institute.

The development comes at a time when NUP president Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert aka Bobi Wine in an exclusive interview with The Observer acknowledged that Ugandans including himself are disappointed with the elected leaders who derailed from the course of the struggle.

In February 2022, the same NUP councillors who went to attend a Garuga conference are the very ones that have again featured on the list that is to meet Gen. Yoweri Museveni today.

It should be recalled that these councillors last year expressed remorse to appeal for a second chance from the embittered NUP supporters. Despite being warned in advance not to be party to NRM government arrangements, 56 out of 85 NUP councillors from Wakiso district defied the party position and went ahead to meet Museveni at Garuga.

Apparently reacting on the meeting slated for today between the trainees at Kyankwanzi and Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, NUP Party spokesperson lashed out at the councillors and district mayors who have embraced the government call.

“These people are shameless. We have got a list that shows that they are the same names that were in Garuga last year. This is all not sanctioned by the party. We will consider what disciplinary measures we shall take on these individuals,” Ssenyonyi said at a morning media interview. “On the other hand, this illegitimate regime should also be shameful for once. If they are indeed organizing a leadership training, why can’t they do it through local government Ministry?,” he wondered.

The ongoing training is said to be under direct supervision and sponsorship by yhe office of the President.
