NUP draws key lessons from Mwesigwa saga, set to revise torture victims policy
The opposition National Unity Platform party are considering abandoning their traditional policy of parading torture victims at press conferences.
This follows the twisted account of Mr. Eric Mwesigwa’s alleged torture following his remarks at Mbuya military barracks headquarters where he appeared before a presser and debunked his earlier version of events.
Mwesigwa yesterday incriminated NUP alleging that the party had lured him to an eye catching deal worth UGX 50m in which he was to reap big upon ‘achieving’ to put the NRM government to bad light. Mwesigwa alleged betrayal by NUP officials who he says later abandoned him by his sick bed at hospital and declined to add him more financial support.
“I did not receive even a single million out of the agreed money,” Mwesigwa alleged. “It is the UPDF who have met all my medical bills and rehabilitation. I was abandoned by my own party,” he claimed.
Addressing media in an interview with one of the city radio stations, NUP spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi says they have learnt something from Mwesigwa’s claims. He says as a party, they will sit down and review their tradition of parading torture victims before pressers.
“You all saw what happened with Mwesigwa’s matter. The same person who on record filed a case with Uganda Human Rights Commission is now distorting his earlier account just because he’s been compromised,” Ssenyonyi wondered. “You all saw Mr. Kaddu who once postured as a witness in the Kayihura torture case. But we will review our policy soon. We are discussing what to do,” he guided.
A shocking audio has surfaced revealing prior events of compromise that led Mwesigwa to his distorted account. Below is a Twitter thread showing telephone call records of Mr. Mwesigwa and a state agent who influenced him to accuse NUP for a fee of about UGX 25.
