NUP leaders visit detained Women’s day protesters in jail
The NUP party Secretariat headed by the head of the women’s league also Kassanda district woman representative Hon. Flavia Kalule Nabagabe, Kalangala woman MP Hellen Nakimuli, head of the informal sector Fred Nyanzi Ssentamu and the secretary general David Lewis Rubongoya teamed up to pay a courtesy visit to the jailed women who were recently remanded by the LDC court.
The eleven women were arrested on women’s day as they marched to express their concerns with a span of repressive tendencies by the incumbent regime. The women say they wouldn’t mark the March 8 women’s day celebrations on grounds that their husbands were detained, and some abducted by the security apparatus of the regime.
The women were denied bail and remanded by the LDC court last week. Their production warrant submitted to prison indicates that they will re-appear for bail application on Monday 20th.
The SG expressed gratitude to all leaders who accompanied him to Luzira women’s prison where the accused are being detained.
“Earlier, alongside other leaders and comrades, we visited eleven female comrades who are detained at Luzira Women Prison. The eleven include Olivia Lutaaya and the ten comrades who were arrested on Women’s Day. They are all very strong despite the persecution and trials.
I am particularly grateful to these National Unity Platform Women Members of Parliament Hon. Flavia Kalule Nabagabe, Hon. Hanifa Nabukeera, Hon. Joyce Baagala, Hon. Nakimuli Hellen and Hon. Susan Mugabi Nakaziba for taking the initiative to visit them and encourage them,” he wrote.
