NUP MPs Kagabo, Bwanika condemn term limits

Controversial National Unity Platform party lawmakers Abed Bwanika of Kimanya Kabonera and his Bukoto Central counterpart Dr. Twaha Kagabo have jointly condemned their party Secretariat for adopting term limits on all elective offices.

According to the duo, the party will deny the country credible leaders who will be grounded by the experience they can attain from serving in those offices.

Under the new reforms adopted by the NUP party, elected individuals will only serve a maximum of two five year terms and retire for other leaders to step in and steer the party ahead. The term limits are applicable to all elected Members of Parliament and local councillors starting from the 2026 tenure.

Kagabo and Bwanika say all these amendments depict dictatorship by the Kamwokya faction.

“What they did is laughable. How will we get credible leaders when you’re forcing competent people to step aside,” Bwanika laments. “These colleagues of mine just wake up and do the unimaginable. Why would someone serve for just two terms?,” Kagabo laments too.

The party spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi however lashes out at the duo saying they have not been attending party meetings to offer their counsel.

“Some of these individuals have not attended party meetings since they won elections. How will such people give a sincere opinion on the party?,” he asked. “We have seen some (Kagabo) gracing the Muhoozi Kainerugaba trail. They’ve already showed us where they pay their allegiance,” he added.
