NUP not part of JEEMA planned protests, says Ssenyonyi

The Spokesperson of the opposition National Unity Platform party Joel Ssenyonyi has distanced the youngest party from nationwide demonstrations plans being mooted by the Justice Forum party.

Addressing scribes of journalists yesterday at a weekly security briefing in Naguru, the Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga unleashed intelligence reports indicating that they had gathered credible information showing that a group of opposition politicians are planning to emulate Kenyan protests.

“Our joint security teams have got intelligence that groups are holding meetings to protest against the rising prices of commodities like it is the case in Kenya,” Enanga said. “There are many sections of the Public Order Management Act that are still in place, including notifying the Inspector General of Police about the planned demonstrations. Organisers of demonstrations should follow the law,” he guided.

Mr. Abdul Noor Kyamundu who speaks for JEEMA approves that they are planning demonstrations to denounce misgovernanace, abductions, corruption and gross rights violations by the sitting NRM government.

“We are engaging our sister opposition parties so that we can jointly stage countrywide protests calling for an end to the rights abuses, corruption, torture and so many other political discrepancies,” he said.

Ssenyonyi however says as NUP, they are not party to such arrangements being mooted by the JEEMA.

“As the National Unity Platform party, we have our avenues to communicate our plans. As of now, we are not aware of the planned demonstrations. We see it as a thieving scheme by the broke police leadership which intends to empty the state coffers,” he said.
