Buganda Road Court has this afternoon remanded four National Unity Platform party speakers who were Monday arrested at the gate of Parliament as they delivered a petition challenging the prolonged detention of political prisoners.

State prosecution argues that the speaker of Nansana Municipal Kasozi Hamuza, Luba Charles (Speaker Makindye), Harris Akampurira (Speaker Kawempe) and Najja Nassif (Speaker Wakiso) staged an unlawful assembly without the consent and approval of the office of the Inspector General of Police contrary to the Public Order Management Act, 2013.

The POMA was nullified by a constitutional court but an appeal by the Attorney General tasked court to stay the execution making all Ugandans in the political spectrum vulnerable to the draconian law.

The speakers took a plea of not guilty and have been remanded to Luzira till next month when they will apply for bail.
