NUP speakers granted bail

The court at the Kampala Capital City Authority hall has this morning granted bail to the NUP speakers who were earlier this week arrested outside parliament as they carried a petition to the speaker Anita Among’s office.

The four were remanded to Luzira prison by the Buganda Road Court till their production at the City Hall court this morning.

The presiding magistrate did not object to their bail given the status of their sureties who included the NUP party secretary general David Lewis Rubongoya. Their counsel Keeya Jeremiah Mwanje convinced court that the suspects are elected leaders who cannot abscond court whenever summoned.

The accused were slapped with charges of unlawful assembly. They include the speaker of Kawempe division Harris Akampurira, speaker of Nansana Hamuza Kasozi, Najja Nassif of Wakiso district, Luba Charles of Makindye and Luyombya Godfrey of Nakawa division.

They spoke to this news publication and maintained that they will not relent in their pursuit for the freedom of political prisoners whose rights continue to be violated by the general court martial.
