NUP women protesters remanded

The Law Development Centre court has remanded the eleven female supporters of the opposition National Unity Platform party who were on women’s day arrested by police as they marched to demonstrate their dismay with the detention of political prisoners.

The eleven suspects were brought to court at around 14:00hrs with their wrists handcuffed after spending nearly 72hrs in custody of Central Police Station in the Kampala Metropolitan area.

Their lawyer Bwowe Ivan had liaised with the relatives of the suspects who were to stand surety for them but state prosecution objected to the bail application.

The presiding magistrate remanded them to Luzira women’s prison till March 29th when they will re-apply for bail.

NUP Youth Wing leader Zaake Francis Butebi was present in court alongside other opposition supporters.
