The women’s league of the opposition National Unity Platform party on Friday braved a heavy morning downpour to mark the international women’s day celebrations at their spacious new party head offices in Makerere, Kavule.

The women’s league head who doubles as Kassanda district woman representative Hon. Flavia Kalule Nabagabe was the host, while the chief guest was Ms. Barbie Ithungo Kyagulanyi, wife to party president Bobi Wine.

Other special guests included women members of Parliament affiliated to the National Unity Platform party, ex ethics Minister Dr. Miria Matembe, former Leader of Opposition Winnie Kiiza, among others.

The women spoke about emancipation and their empowerment in society as they stress that they too can execute the same tasks men do.

Barbie challenged women to rise up and compete for elective offices. She also urged them to always speak out whenever their voices seem to be suppressed.

Dr. Matembe expressed her dismay with the women in cabinet who championed the Karamoja iron sheets theft. She says it was really shameful that women in the NRM government cabinet are the ones championing corruption.

The other guest speaker Hon. Winnie Kiiza from the Alliance for National Transformation party condemned the brutal arrest of the eleven women who were on women’s day arrested by police. She maintains that the right to peaceful demonstrations is a constitutional provision.

Bobi who graced the event had this to say;

What a great delight spending the day with these great women as the National Unity Platform belatedly celebrated the International Women’s Day! Today I was not the Chief Guest, but Barbie Kyagulanyi . We were very humbled to listen to and learn from respected women of virtue, including Hon. Miria Matembe and Hon. Winnie Kiiza. Women treated us to great entertainment. Women took charge of every role, including security and yet again proved that what a man can do, a woman can do even better. I am very grateful to our Women Wing for such an exciting event. May we all purpose and be intentional in empowering women and girls in our respective spaces.
