Parliament to debate on Anti-homosexuality Bill today; Here’s NUP should do?
Today, the Parliament is to adopt and debate on the majority report endorsing the criminalization of the LGBT activities via the anti-homosexuality Bill 2023.
The order paper presented today indicates that the proponent of the Bill, also Bugiri Municipality MP Asuman Basalirwa will present the Bill for the second and third reading.
It is unclear whether the voting will be a show of hands, as suggested by the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among.
If passed, the Bill will prohibit same sex relationships, strength Uganda’s ability to deal with threats to the traditional heterosexual family, protect cultural and traditional values, and prevent the gay and lesbian practice among youths and lesbian practice among youths and children by imposing penalties on offenders.
The Bill is according to insiders intended to expose the stand of the opposition NUP party on the LGBTQ rights.
Previously, NRM propagandists have since the rise of Bobi Wine in 2018 claimed that he is backed by the West and LGBTQ funders. During the 2021 general elections, Gen. Museveni himself on record re-echoed these allegations that Bobi and NUP are ”agents of the LGBT”.
However, NUP as a party are favored by the good will of Ugandans regardless of where they stand on the LGBTQ debate. The NUP has been very vocal on matters concerning human rights, a stance that has enabled the party to enjoy the support of the majority.
In the prevailing LGBTQ circus, the NUP should through its Leader of Opposition Rt. Hon. Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba rally their lawmakers to stay away from today’s plenary. The President H.E Bobi Wine has clearly stated that this whole debate is diversionary and does not apply in the context of issues affecting Ugandans.
