National Unity Platform party president Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert aka Bobi Wine has strongly condemned the manner in which police violently arrested 11 women as they demonstrated on women’s day.

The 11 ladies were picked from Kaleerwe, a low income city suburb where they had staged a march in demand for their husbands who continue to languish in custody on politically inspired charges.

In a statement, Bobi says it was totally absurd that the day on which the women are supposed to enjoy their liberties, they are instead maltreated and manhandled by the police.

“To mark the International Women’s Day, these ladies held a peaceful protest to denounce the ongoing abduction, torture and detention without trial of innocent citizens in Uganda who include partners to some of the protesters.

Unfortunately, the criminal regime’s Police force resorted to its usual tactics of oppression when it violently broke up the peaceful protest and arrested many of the ladies involved. Their relatives and friends remain blocked from accessing them at Wandegeya Police Station where they are detained.

We call for the immediate release of the protesting ladies, for they committed no crime whatsoever. Their constitutional right to dignity and peaceful protest must be respected. We also reiterate our demand that all political prisoners be freed unconditionally. #BringBackOurPeople,” Bobi posted.

By the time of filing this report, the women had been transferred from Wandegeya police station to CPS where the authorities are contemplating taking them to Buganda Road Court to he charged with convening an unlawful assembly.
