Ugandan embassy attacked by unknown pro-gay activist
The Ugandan special envoy Adonia Ayebare has disclosed that the Uganda House office building which houses the Permanent Mission of Uganda to the UN has been attacked by a suspected pro-gay activist.
Mr. Ayebare in a Wednesday tweet said a yet to be identified individual ‘damaged a glass of a rear entrance door and injured a South Sudanese Diplomat (tenants)” at the time of the attack.
Ayebare maintains that it’s too early to ascertain the motive but he suspects that it is possible that the assailant is angry about the anti-homosexuality bill passed by parliament.
The Ugandan envoy says fortunately the events were captured on CCTV and the New York police officers are already reviewing the events.
Uganda House is just next to the UN Headquarters in New York.
Parliament on Tuesday completed the passage of the anti-homosexuality Bill 2023 with at least 389 lawmakers backing its approval.
The Bill has since attracted international outcry with several donor states threatening sanctions on Kampala.
The National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said if the legislation is assented into law by President Museveni, Washington would have to look at slapping sanctions on Uganda.
Uganda has been a key US partner receiving over $1.5 billion in health and security aid among others. Anthony Kujawa, the US mission spokesperson in Uganda says they will reconsider to withdraw the $500m aid to the HIV/Aids fight in Uganda.
