Who are the 28 NUP supporters denied bail by GCM

The General Court Martial panel of judges chaired by Brig. Gen Robert Freeman Mugabe yesterday approved bail for just 4 out of the 32 National Unity Platform party supporters who have grapped with capital offense of possession of Military stores, and ammunition.

The group has been on remand since their arrest in 2021 prior to the inauguration of the reigning NRM regime.

Attempts to get bail by the jailed suspects have all encountered objections with state prosecution raising unjustified concerns like the compromise of investigations among others.

For the entirety of the two years, only one witness has been produced by the state prosecutor side led by Lt. Gift Muhabamwe.

The only lucky 4 who were yesterday granted bail were told not to exceed the Kampala and Wakiso jurisdiction without the approval and knowledge of the court martial.

What is important to note is that the Constitutional Court last year nullified trial of civilians by the court martial and directed that all pending trials be reassigned to the High Court. This however was overlooked by the general court martial which continues to try ordinary civilians with impunity.

The four who were released include Ronald Mayiga, Richard Njobi, Kenneth Kamya and Shafic Ngobi.
